ITEA Mourns the Passing of Dr. Hani Mahmassani

Ian Savage, from the local organizing committee of ITEA 2025, relays the sad news that Dr. Hani Mahmassani passed away on July 15—just a few weeks after the ITEA Annual School and Conference in Evanston, Illinois. Hani was a towering figure in the transportation research community. As Director of the Northwestern University Transportation Center, he was an enthusiastic supporter and facilitator of bringing ITEA to Northwestern in 2013, and its return in 2025.

ITEA turned out to be the final major event in his long and distinguished career. Many attendees will have fond memories of interacting with Hani at the sessions and informally at the social events. An abiding memory will be of socializing on the dinner cruise on that warm Chicago evening.

Ian Savage remarked:

“Hani was a giant in the profession, known to all and respected across all disciplines in our field. But more importantly, he was a kind and generous colleague and seemingly a friend to everybody.”
